Top 7 Water Tank Selection parameters to consider Before Buying a New Water Tank

Author: Dr. Saleem Iqbal (PhD, Aerospace Materials, Netherlands)

Selecting the right water tank is an important decision for any household or industrial facility, as it directly impacts water quality, durability, maintenance needs, and long-term cost. With so many brands, shapes, and quality levels available in the local market, buyers often struggle to identify which features truly matter. smart customers today look beyond just price and brand. They evaluate key performance factors that truly matter.

As an expert in different types of high performance materials, I have compiled the seven water tank selection parameters—Expected Life of Water Tank, Warranty, Cost, Repairability, Thermal Performance, Available Sizes, and Shapes—to help you make an informed and confident purchase. Understanding these factors will not only ensure better performance and longevity but also protect your investment for years to come. As we discussed in our pervious blog that based on manufacturing process, there are two types of water tanks available in the market; Blow Mold Water Tanks and Roto Mold Water Tanks. Keeping these 7 parameters in mind, we will discover which type of tank is better.

Water Tank Selection Parameters

1- Expected Tank Life

Blow Mold Tanks manufactured by many local manufacturers have low quality mterials which degrades faster and even joints of these tanks open within an year. These tanks have expected life of  2 – 10 years (wide variation with quality).

Roto Mold Tanks have better UV- resistance, high flexibility and toughness and ages very slowly. These tanks have expected life of  10 – 25 years.

2- Warranty Period

Blow Mold Tanks comes with a warranty ranges between 1 – 10 years (Big variation in warranty period depending on quality of materials and brands)

Due to better material quality, high flexibility and high UV resistance, Roto Mold Water Tanks come with a warranty between 5 to 10 years

3- Tank Price

Due to fast manufacturing process and shorter life, Blow Mold Water Tanks have low market price. Small manufacturers often add recycles materials which further reduces the material cost.

Due to high quality, longer life spam, high warranty periods, longer manufacturing process, Roto Mold Water Tanks are expensive

4- Repair-ability

Blow Mold Water Tanks are not repairable in any case. In case of any damage or crack developed, they are just scrap and they need to be replaced

Roto Mold Water Tanks are easily repairable. In case of any damage or crack developed, they are repaired in a similar way as welding of metals is done. After repairing, they restore their original condition.

5- Weather Resistance

Due to the white color of Blow Mold Water Tanks, they control about 10-20% heat which is not enough to prevent water from getting hot and cold. Even temperature of water cannot be maintained in 7 ply blow mold water tanks. 5 Ply and 7 Ply water tanks does not have any insulation and increasing number of plies without adding thickness is useless.

Roto Mold Water Tanks are not weather resistant and water gets hot in summer and cold in winter. However, currently, a roto mold water tank with built-in insulation (InsuTank – A Smart Water Tank) is available with excellent temperature control both in summer and winter.

6- Tank Shapes

Blow Mold Water Tanks are only available in Vertical shape. Therefore, both size and shape of tanks are limited.

Roto Mold Water Tanks are available in vertical shape, horizontal capsule shape, chorus shape, and loft tanks are all possible with roto molding process

7- Tank Sizes

Blow Mold Tanks come in sizes 300L, 400L, 600L, 800L,1000L,1200L,1500L and 2000L. These tanks are not available in sizes bigger than 2000L.

Roto Mold Tanks come in sizes of 300L, 400L, 600L, 800L,1000L,1200L,1500L, 2000L, 4000L, 6000L, 10,000L, 20,000L.

Conclusion

Choosing a water tank becomes much easier when you evaluate it through these seven essential parameters. Whether you prioritize long life, better insulation, affordability, or ease of repair, the right tank should offer a balance that suits your climate, usage, and budget. By considering Expected Life, Warranty, Cost, Repairability, Thermal Performance, Sizes, and Shapes, you can ensure the tank you select delivers dependable performance throughout the year—even in extreme hot summers or cold winters. With growing awareness and better technology, today’s buyers have more reliable and efficient options than ever before. Make a smart decision today for a worry-free tomorrow.

If cost is your main concern then Blow Mold Water Tank will be the choice. However, if extended tank life, quality and longer warranty period is your priority, then Roto Mold Water Tank is the best option. Going one step further, if you want water at comfortable temperature in all seasons, then Roto Mold Water Tank with Built-in Insulation (InsuTank – A smart water tank) is the only option to adopt.
